Its not quite a netbook and its more powerful than a smartphone – Meet the Smartbook.

The news is that Microsoft are leaving the world of the smartbook to everyone else. Microsofts windows setup is built to be used on the X86 used by Intel and is not suitable for the ARM based processors. The companies that are making these devices are Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and Freescale.

Microsoft not getting involved in the smartbook market may have an effect on it, being such a big hitter, it could mean they aren’t confident smartbooks will take off like netbooks or laptops, but hey, no one is going to give you a free laptop. I suppose we will have to wait and see if Microsoft have made the right decision.

The standard features that you can expect from a smartphone will extend to; Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-fi and 3G mobile broadband and HD video. With all this for the potential price of just $199. It may not be long until they are as common as the mobile phone.
