It appears that the new Lenovo Skylight is definately in the smartbook category. As before its not as powerful as a netbook but more powerful than your smartphone.

The Lenovo Skylight uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor which runs at 1 GHz, and uses a chip thats more or less the same as the ones in the LG Expo and the HTC HD2. Netbooks tend to use the new Intel Atom N450, but, it appears that the smartbooks are going to use more mobile phone parts than laptop or netbook parts. In turn this will keep them much lighter and portable

The Skylight also runs a Linux operating system and not Windows 7, meaning the processesor is not going to be worked too hard, plus, with the Amazon MP3 store and Roxio’s CinemaNow service the Skylight still has some good web facilities on board, allowing you to watch videos and download.

It is thought that the Lenovo Skylight will also be able to run HD content at 720p with its 1280 x 720p resolution. On top of all this the smartbook comes with a flash memory of 20GB, two USB ports and a 1.3-megapixel camera. With planned shipping to take place around April in the US, it shouldn’t be long till we see one over in the UK. The only unfortunate thing is the price, it is thought they will be available for $499.

Currently, there are approximately 22.1 million Intel units powering Netbooks. Arm curently powers 1.4 million smartbooks. Over the next few years these figurs will become ever closer and then by 2012 Arm may have the majority share with Intel shiiping 43.2 million netbooks and ARM 52.9 million smartbook units. Surely this shows the potential of the smartbook market and how, over time, it may begin to take over this new market. We certainly hope so.

This mobile computer is definately sleek and stylish – it only weighs a mere 638 grams. It comes with 3G technology, which means you are always connected and therefore you can email friends and surf the net whenever you want. Even when there is no hotspot.

Even though this product is small, it still manages to provide an excellent 8 inch LCD display. Within this, comes a 1600 x 768 resolution. You can easily open two screens for browsing the web or checking music files.

So, is the Toshiba TG01 the first smartbook. With smartbooks not being planned for release until the Autumn of 2009, have Toshiba decided to jump the gun. Well, according to Jean-Varaldi, who is a senior director of marketing and business development at Qualcomm, the company producing the snapdragon processor, seems to think so. He recently referred to the Toshiba TG01 as the first Smartbook.

The TG01 has, at the moment, the biggest screen you can find for a smartphone / smartbook, at a whopping 4.1 inches. Coupled with the fastest processor (the reason for the smartbook name) of 1GHz it makes it the most powerful phone around. If you are looking for a widescreen smartbook to watch videos the Toshiba might be the one.

Plus, if you enjoy gaming and your internet applications running smoothly on your phone, then this slim and sleek designed Toshiba is one of the best you can get.

For more details and a closer look at the TG01 you could go over to

Hopefully, fingers crossed, there will soon be more of these high powered, phones on the market, which we’ll be calling Smartbooks. Then, surely the competition for the biggest and best will truely begin.

The companies that are making these devices are Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and Freescale.

Microsoft not getting involved in the smartbook market may have an effect on it, being such a big hitter, it could mean they aren’t confident smartbooks will take off like netbooks or laptops, but hey, no one is going to give you a free laptop. I suppose we will have to wait and see if Microsoft have made the right decision.
